Google Ads vs open-exchange display
Search and open-exchange display are different jobs. This page splits the jobs. It does not pretend we are Google Ads experts.
Published 2026-09-09 · Search job: Google Ads vs programmatic display
This is a job split, not a Google Ads teardown.
We run prepaid open-exchange display through Adprime Zero. We do not operate Google Ads as a product, we do not publish Google benchmark tables, and we will not invent search CPCs or Quality Score advice. If you need Google-specific tactics, use Google's docs or someone who lives in that UI.
The useful question is which job you are hiring.
The jobs
Google Ads (as buyers commonly use it) is intent and Google inventory: search keywords, and Google's own display and YouTube surfaces when you turn those on. People type a query, or they are already inside Google's graph. The optimization loop is Google's. You are not choosing SSPs and placement IDs.
Open-exchange display is remnant banners across many exchanges. You buy impressions on sites and apps that still have leftover 300x250 (or other) slots. You do not get the typed query. You get a placement, a domain, an SSP, and whatever click that environment produces.
Adprime Zero is the second job, prepaid, with an agent path. It is not a Google Ads reseller.
What we have measured on our job
On our August 2026 Supply Bench pull (partial coverage), 93.4 percent of 1,149 placements had zero clicks and took 64 percent of observed spend. Seven domains produced 41.3 percent of clicks from 4.7 percent of impressions. Unauthorized ads.txt spend was $0.48. Reseller CTR was 0.423 percent against direct 0.184 percent. SSP CTR on the same creative ran from OPENX at 0.111 percent to SMARTADSERVER at 3.074 percent. No IVT vendor was attached.
That is remnant behavior. It is not a statement about Google Search. Do not export those rates into a Google Ads plan.
How we judge our job: click-to-page-view and, once a vendor tag is on, strict IVT. Anonymized main-seat brand-name display flights sat at 15.85 percent click-to-page-view when usable and 3.75 percent when not; 0.523 percent IVT acceptable and 1.544 percent when they triggered intervention. CTR is the trap. See how to judge display traffic.
When to use which
Use Google Ads when the buyer is searching for the thing you sell, or when you specifically want Google's inventory and auction. We will not tell you how to structure those campaigns.
Use open-exchange display when you want a cheap, isolated message test, when you want to watch supply grain, or when an agent should launch without a Google Ads account. Start from programmatic ads for startups.
Use both when the jobs stay separate. A search campaign that already converts is not "proven display." A remnant cell that produced visits is not "proven search." Do not move a winning remnant headline into Search and call it a lift study unless you designed that study.
What not to copy across
Do not copy Google conversion tags into Adprime Zero or the reverse. Our conversion events use official install snippets and an event-scoped secret. See the conversion event checklist.
Do not expect Google-style query reports from remnant. Ask for placement, domain, and inventory source. If your remnant dashboard only shows CTR, you are missing the readout.
We are not going to rank the two products. They sell different inventory into different questions. Pick the question first.
