Authorized inventory can still be junk

ads.txt authorization answers who may sell a domain. It does not answer whether the traffic is usable. 99.85 percent of this buy was already authorized.

Published 2026-09-09 · Search job: authorized ads.txt bad traffic

Authorized ads.txt traffic can still be junk because authorization is a seller permission, not a quality meter. On the 2026-09-02 Supply Bench pull we spent $195.56 Authorized-Direct, $120.59 Authorized-Reseller, and $0.48 Unauthorized. 99.85 percent of observed spend was already authorized. The click pile still sat on seven domains that produced 41.3 percent of clicks from 4.7 percent of impressions.

If a dashboard badge says Authorized and you stop looking, you will miss the waste this flight actually produced.

What authorized did not prevent

Inside that authorized-heavy slice:

  • 1,073 placements, 93.4 percent, had zero clicks and took $202.77.
  • people.com ran 144 impressions and 23 clicks, 15.97 percent CTR.
  • msn.com ran 785 impressions and 42 clicks, 5.35 percent CTR.
  • Reseller clicked at 0.423 percent versus Direct at 0.184 percent.
  • OPENX took 44 percent of spend at 0.111 percent CTR while SMARTADSERVER ran 3.074 percent and THIRTY_THREE_ACROSS ran 18.18 percent on the same creative.

None of those facts required an unauthorized row. The $0.48 Unauthorized bucket is why we retracted ads.txt-as-fix for this waste. The long form is ads.txt did not save this buy. The reseller spread is Reseller paths clicked 2.3x more than direct.

What the word is for

ads.txt tells a buyer which companies a publisher said may sell its inventory. Direct and Reseller are both authorized. Unauthorized is a seller the publisher did not list. Unknown is a path the crawl could not classify. Those are useful hygiene states. They are not IVT, not viewability, and not click-to-page-view.

We still treat blocking Unauthorized and Unknown as reasonable hygiene. We do not treat Authorized-Direct as a cleanup. The unused lever on these flights was inventory_quality.inventory_sources_include sent as []. An empty include is not a filter we applied.

The glossary page is ads.txt.

What we will not claim

We will not say authorized inventory is fraudulent. We will not say Direct is clean. We had no IVT vendor attached. Zero invalid_impressions means nothing was measuring. Concentration and implausible CTR are the claims we can stand on, labeled as our reading, not as a certification.

Authorized is the floor most of this buy already cleared. Junk, on this page, means inventory we would not keep buying if we had a visit meter and a vendor tag and still saw this shape. Until those meters exist, we keep the word junk tied to the table, not to a moral category.
